We are in an information explosion era. A lot of multifarious stories, gadgets, technologies pop up in our daily life through magazines, newspapers, television and the Internet.
The sharp development of technology goes beyond our imagination. It is more obvious after the Internet shrank our world into a smaller "village", communication and information exchanging became easier. I must say, media surrounded me as my intimate friends.
My most wisest friend: Books

My mom is a huge sci-fi books fans and that makes me one too. My mom brought me to library sine I was six, I bet she did not know how much I could read, but thanks her for that she accidentally opened up a door of a brand new world for me. Except sci-fi, detective, mystery, self-help, travel are also my favourite book genres. I read 3 to 6 books a month when I was in Hong Kong. Library is not close to my house, but we can borrow 6 books in once.
My most dramatic friend :Television

When books could not fulfill my curiosity about our world, television showed up, my family never put restrictions on my screen time, so I kind of blaming on it for me to wear glasses. It is usual for restaurant or shops turn on their television to attract customers, for some reasons that my family always eat out, so television is also counted as a dish on our dining table.
Hong Kong has only two free-to-air television broadcasters. One is Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB), another one is Asia Television (aTV), they provide two Chinese channel and two English channel in total. However, aTV is not as popular as TVB, audience in Hong Kong watch TVB is not because the quality of shows is high, but because aTV does not provide any high quality shows or TV drama programs. I do not like the way TVB produces their TV program, they are not educational, not meaningful, loose stories with same main actors.
My most hateful and helpful friend: the Internet

Then it was my bigger brother made me met with the Internet. I started surfing on the Internet to absorb new things I have never seen. I read news, tweets, status, other's comments... And I found out language could be protean and the expression could be different from changing only one word.
I am not so sure about how the Internet changed other's world, but I know mine. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, Wechat, Line... It makes the distance between me and my friends shorter, even we are not at the same place, we can still get a instant feedback, like we are always with each other.

Interesting! I'm surprised nobody put restrictions on your screen time!! Looks like you had one hell of a childhood ;)
ReplyDeleteI am kind of surprise too because I thought that's what other parents do.
DeleteTV in Hong Kong sounds pretty boring. We will be interested in your reactions to U.S. TV. What about your life with other forms of media?
ReplyDeleteYes, it's BORING. U.S Tv is much better than Hong Kong, but I don't watch TV often since I came here. I picked those most related media to me in my life to mention, so... I didn't write all of them.
Deletei enjoyed the glimpse you gave me of media in another culture. and envy your admiration towards books.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy how you added personification in to your storytelling. I have to agree that the Internet is the most useful medium of media as you have access to so much information at the tip of your fingers!
